Ice Barrel vs a chilled plunge vs a chest-freezer conversion

Home cold is three different products pretending to be one search. An ice-fed barrel has no compressor. A chilled tub holds a set temperature with a refrigeration circuit. A chest-freezer conversion is a DIY class with electrical and liner risks ThriveHop will not walk you through.

Who this class fits

  • Patio, garage, or a utility corner that can take water weight and splash.
  • People who will either buy ice, run a chiller, or are already considering a DIY tub.
  • Households that can drain and treat the water they actually use.

Skip this class if

  • You have only a closet. Water weight and splash do not belong next to clothes.
  • You wanted cryo (dry air). That is a studio chamber class, not a home barrel.

Ice-fed barrel class

This class is an upright barrel or tub you fill with water and ice, or that you let sit and re-ice. There is no compressor to plug in, so the electrical ask is usually just lighting and a pump if you add one. The daily cost is ice, time, and dumping or treating water.

Ice Barrel is the widely sold example of this class. A barrel still needs a level pad, a way to drain, and a cover. Outdoor freeze-thaw and algae are maintenance, not features. ThriveHop does not invent water temperatures or session times.

Compressor-chilled plunge class

A chilled tub holds water at a target temperature with a refrigeration unit. That is a different electrical class: many home chillers want a dedicated circuit, and some want 240V. Read the nameplate. Do not assume a garage opener outlet is enough.

Plunge is a common example of this class. You still need drainage, a floor that can hold a filled tub, and a plan for condensation. Indoor installs without a floor drain become a bucket-and-mop product. ThriveHop does not list prices; if a brand does not publish one, we omit it.

Chest-freezer conversion class

This is a DIY class: a used freezer, a liner, and often a temperature controller. It is not a consumer appliance with a published wet-use listing for human immersion. Wiring, GFCI, liner chemistry, and a lid that can trap someone are real hazards.

ThriveHop does not publish a conversion how-to, a wiring diagram, or a shopping list. If you go this route, treat it as electrical and water work — not a weekend unboxing. The ice-fed and chilled classes exist because they are sold as immersion products.
