120V infrared vs 240V traditional sauna at home

The first cut is electrical, not brand. Cabins built for a standard US 120V receptacle are a different class from Finnish-style heaters that need a dedicated 240V circuit and an electrician. Confirm the nameplate on the unit you are considering, and the spare capacity on your panel, before you buy.

  • A spare room, finished basement, or garage where you want daily heat.
  • Households that only have 120V nearby, or that can budget a 240V run.
  • People comparing an infrared cabin to a hot-air room — not a hot tub.

Skip this class if

  • You only have a closet. Heat cabins need clearance, ventilation, and a door swing.
  • You wanted a hot tub or swim spa. That is a different heat class and is not this page.

What the 120V infrared class is

Consumer infrared cabins are usually sold as a 120V plug-in or a hardwired 120V circuit. The selling point is that many houses already have that voltage in a spare room. You still have to check amperage: a unit that wants a dedicated 20A circuit is not the same as sharing a bedroom outlet with a space heater.

Air temperature is typically lower than a Finnish room. Heat comes from infrared emitters aimed at the body. That is a different exposure than a wood-stove or electric-stove sauna. What the 240V traditional class is

Traditional home saunas in the US usually pair an insulated room (cedar or similar) with an electric heater in the several-kilowatt range. Those heaters are commonly specified for a dedicated 240V circuit. That is a panel and wiring job, not a power strip.

If your garage subpanel is already full, the constraint is the service, not the bench. An electrician can say whether a new 240V run is realistic. ThriveHop does not size breakers or invent a heater wattage for a brand.

Garage and indoor constraints

Indoor rooms need a vapor plan: flooring that tolerates sweat, a door that is not a bedroom closet, and exhaust so you are not dumping humidity into living space. Garages add vehicle exhaust, unconditioned temperature swings, and often a shared dryer circuit you should not tap.

GFCI protection, clearance to insulation and stored fuel, and a floor that can take the cabin weight are on you and the installer. Patio saunas exist as a class, but outdoor electrical still has to be rated for wet locations.
